Pentos

Pentos is one of the Free Cities found within Essos and is ruled by Prince Tregar Moharis.

Their sigil is a grey square tower over waves and a yellow sky.
Their map colour is light sea green.

History

Pentos is one of the largest of the Free Cities of Essos but is considered the weakest of them all due to the constraints placed on them by Braavos during their last war. Pentos is not allowed to hire mercenary companies, keep slaves, keep a standing army, and is limited to a navy of twenty galleys. With all these limitations on their power, Pentos is frail, but they have been able to find some creative ways to get around the disastrous peace terms dictated to them.

Many of the Pentoshi ships can be easily converted into military service, though they remain under the ownership of either a trade guild or spice guild. The spice guilds have become the de facto army of Pentos and man the city’s defences. While these things give Pentos some level of defence, they primarily rely on good diplomacy to prevent their destruction at the hands of the Dothraki or their neighbours.

Location

Pentos is perhaps one of the first cities you will see, setting sail from Westeros. Their capital and namesake, Pentos, is on the most eastern shore of Essos. Their neighbours are Myr to the south and Braavos to the north, to whom they previously lost a war. To the west are the “Disputed Lands,” which many of the Free Cities claim and often fight over. They are also frequently visited by the Dothraki from the Dothraki Sea far away.

Religion

There are various religions in the Free City of Pentos. Some traders from the West may pray to the Seven, the red priests in their temple worship R’hllor, and Dothraki khals, selling their plunder or receiving favour, worship the Great Stallion.

Troop Tree

Pentos has a balanced troop roster, especially compared to the other Free Cities. Not relying heavily on slaves or water dancers, their basic footman is equipped with a gambeson, and the Pentoshi archer unit is equipped with longbows. The cavalry is also fast and bears decent equipment. They lack particular specialisation in their units. A powerful Pentos army would use the higher-tier infantry to hold your enemy in place, as your archers volley fire and cavalry charge into the flanks.

Strengths

  • Jack of all trades, master of none, but worst at nothing.

Weaknesses

  • Low horse armour.

Recruiting Units from Norvos

Pentoshi units can be recruited from villages regardless of player status unless they are hostile to Pentos. Additional ways to recruit Pentoshi units are to rescue them from enemy lords’ parties, find them in taverns, or rescue them from enemy garrisons.
