House Targaryen

House Targaryen is a relatively new faction in comparison to the other kingdoms, it being a foreign invader. House Targaryen is actually of ancient Valyrian descent, being the only Valyrian family to survive The Doom. They survived the cataclysmic event by leaving the Valyrian freehold 12 years before The Doom took place, taking them and their dragons with them. After escaping from the freehold the Targaryens landed in Dragonstone where they actually established the castle there, which still stands there. The Targaryens resided there peacefully with the other existing kingdoms for a time, before Aegon and his sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya, began the wars of conquest. To support his war with the kingdoms of Westeros Aegon constructed a fort called Aegonfort in the place of present day Kings Landing. He used this small wooden fort to launch attacks against his enemies in Westeros, eventually conquering all of the kingdoms and placing them under Targaryen rule. When he returned to the Aegonfort he found a small city constructed around it, and decided to construct the red keep there. He gathered the swords from his fallen enemies and melted them together into a chair fit for a conqueror, he then placed it inside of the red keep. From then on Aegonfort was referred to as Kings Landing. The Targaryens ruled the 7 kingdoms for over 300 years before Robert Baratheon rose up in rebellion against Aerys Targaryen. After the rebellion was over almost all Targaryens were killed by Robert and the Westerlands. Only a couple of Targaryens managed to escape with their lives, two escaped to Essos and one is even rumored to be at the wall. But now that the Targaryens have a new leader, it is finally time for them to take back what is theirs, With fire and blood.

Location

House Targaryen is different than the other factions in that it does not have a initial location when you start off the game. Instead, House Targaryen will spawn in at Dragonstone as soon as you complete Vary's questline and will instantly conquer the castle. The location is a good point for them to be able to stage an assault on The Westerlands, allowing them to attack them from the sea. Because of their large armies it is very likely that House Targaryen will be able to conquer a string of castles and towns very quickly within a few days of them landing, however they do not keep these large armies for very long meaning you can simply wait for them to die down before attacking. Because of their location and initial number of large troops it is very difficult to stage an assault on Dragonstone.

Troop Tree

Keep in mind that you must either have House Targaryen land in Westeros or choose Targaryen culture to be able to get these units. House Targaryen does not really specialize in any type of unit, having one of the most well rounded faction troop trees in the game. Their archers have excellent armor and bows for a ranged unit, but do suffer from having no effective melee weapon until their final upgrade. Their infantry units are decent, and are best comparable with Westerland footmen armor and weapon wise. The heavy cavalry they field are quite good actually, with them both having close range skirmisher cavalry with swords, as well as lancers that can charge through an enemy formation. If fielding a Crownland army it is advisable to keep your archers very far away from the enemy and preferably on a high up hill. Your infantry is best used protecting the archers in a shield wall until the enemy reaches you. Your cavalry can either be directly to the right or left of your infantry or far off to either direction. Once the enemy has passed your cavalry simply have them charge behind the enemy lines and after they have split then have your infantry charge and mop them up.

Extra Information

If you choose a Targaryen character in the beginning, not only will you be able to recruit Crownland units from villages you own, but you will automatically get 100+ relations with House Targaryen.

House Targaryen only lands after Vary's questline has been completed.

All of House Targaryens initial lords have positive modifiers, making them excellent lords.

If you have 100 right to rule, lots of honor, and have a kingdom of your own with lots of land, you can essentially steal Targaryen lords. Because they only start off with one castle when they land and have positive modifiers, if you recruit them as soon as you see them you can gain about 4 positive lords with large armies easily.

If you have House Targaryen land on the continent then Dorne will join with them against in a war against the Westerlands.

House Targaryen will instantly be at war with the Westerlands as soon as they land in Westeros.

House Targaryens leader will always have the special Valyrian steel sword Blackfyre.

Recruiting units from House Targaryen

House Targaryen fields Crownland Units, which can obtained in two ways. If you choose Targaryen culture when creating a character then you can recruit them from any villages you own once you are an independent monarch. Otherwise you will have to complete Vary's questline and have the Targaryens land in Westeros. You can them recruit Crownland units from any village owned by House Targaryen.
